Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Financial Coach
Know what to ask so you can choose the right coach for you
Before You Book Anything
These questions will help you understand what you are getting into and whether a particular coach is right for your situation.
A good coach will be happy to answer these questions before you commit. If they are evasive or defensive, that is a red flag.
Essential Questions
1. How are you paid? Do you earn commission on any products?
This is the most important question. Look for coaches who are paid a flat fee or subscription, not commission.
Red flag: If a coach earns commission from product providers, their recommendations may be biased.
2. What qualifications do you have?
In the UK, 'financial coach' is not a regulated title. Look for coaches with relevant financial qualifications (like the Diploma for Financial Advisors) and coaching certifications.
3. What happens in a typical coaching session?
A good session should review your progress, help you understand your options, and leave you with two or three specific actions. Avoid coaches who only lecture or do not give clear next steps.
4. How often will we meet and how do we communicate between sessions?
Look for regular sessions plus email access between sessions. Make sure you understand the communication boundaries.
5. Can I cancel ongoing coaching if it is not working?
You should be able to cancel with reasonable notice. Be wary of long-term contracts or difficult cancellation processes.
