Frequently Asked Questions

How the FIRE calculator works

Your annual savings are your income minus your expenses. Your FIRE number is your target annual retirement spending divided by your safe withdrawal rate, so £30,000 a year at 4% needs £750,000. If you tick the State Pension option, the calculator reduces the target by a flat £300,000 to reflect the income the State Pension will provide later in life.

The projection starts from your current investments plus your pension, adds a year of growth at your expected return and a year of savings, and repeats until the portfolio reaches your FIRE number or 60 years pass.

What the results mean

  • FIRE number: the portfolio that could fund your target spending indefinitely at your chosen withdrawal rate.
  • Years to FIRE: how long it takes to reach that number at your current savings rate.
  • Coast FIRE number: the amount that, left invested with no further saving, would grow into your FIRE number by age 65.
  • Lean and Fat FIRE milestones: 20 and 50 times your target spending, a leaner and a more comfortable version of financial independence.
  • Savings rate: the share of your income you save. It usually matters more than investment returns for how quickly you get there.

UK things the headline number leaves out

  • Pension money is locked until minimum pension age (57 from 6 April 2028), so retiring earlier needs enough in ISAs or other accessible savings to bridge the gap. The ISA allowance is £20,000 a year.
  • Savings, expenses and returns are held constant and are not adjusted for inflation or tax on withdrawals.
  • The flat State Pension adjustment is a rough estimate. For a year-by-year view with market ups and downs, use the Monte Carlo retirement calculator.
