You Have Until 23 August to Claim £150 Off Your Energy Bill.

This is not complicated. This is not a strategy piece. This is a £150 you either get or you do not, and the deadline is a Saturday three weeks from today.

If you think you might be eligible, the only thing that matters is being named on the right energy account by 23 August 2026. Everything else can be sorted afterwards.

Who Gets It Automatically

You get the £150 automatically if you are in one of the two core groups and your energy supplier is part of the scheme. The qualifying benefits are:

- Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit or Savings Credit)

- Universal Credit with earnings below the threshold

- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance

- Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance

- Income Support

If you are in any of those groups and your supplier is signed up (most of the big six are), you should receive the £150 as a credit on your electricity bill, or a voucher if you use a prepayment meter. You do not need to apply. A letter usually arrives in autumn confirming what you will get. The deadline still matters because the eligibility check happens on or around 23 August, so your qualifying benefit and account details need to be correct by then.

Who Has To Apply Directly

Even if you are not on a means-tested benefit, you may still qualify if your home is harder or costlier to heat. The 2026/27 scheme expands the eligible group to include households receiving:

- Attendance Allowance, the middle or higher rate of the care component of Disability Living Allowance, or the daily living component of Personal Independence Payment

- A low-income benefit with a child under five in the household

- Certain housing-cost related support where energy use is high

You apply directly through your energy supplier, not the government. Each supplier runs its own window with its own deadline, and the windows close between now and 23 August. Apply this week if you can. Spots under the expanded group fill on a first-come, first-served basis each year.

The Deadline Detail That Trips People Up

The deadline is not about when you submit an application. The deadline is about who is named on the energy account on 23 August 2026.

If your partner handles the energy bill and your name is not on the account, the qualification can fail. If you have recently moved and the account is still in someone else's name, the qualification can fail. If the account holder has changed since last year, the qualification can fail.

This is the bit nobody talks about. The fix is ten minutes on the phone with your supplier.

What To Do This Week

1. Check whether you receive one of the qualifying means-tested benefits. Pension Credit is the largest automatic group and accounts for most successful claims.

2. Look at your energy bill. Is your name on it? If not, sort that this week.

3. If you think you qualify under the expanded group, search "Warm Home Discount" plus your supplier's name and apply directly through their site. Do it today, not tomorrow.

4. If you are unsure, call your supplier. Five minutes on the phone can save you £150.

If You Miss The Deadline

The 2026/27 Warm Home Discount scheme closes for new applications around 23 August. After that date, you cannot retrospectively claim. The next scheme runs in autumn 2027 for the 2027/28 winter period. If you miss this one, you wait a year.
